NMS Communications Brings Mobile TV to the Philippines

In February, Yours Truly told how NMS Communications made it possible for more than 30 million mobile phone users in the Philippines to access a new video SMS (Short Messaging Service) called Video Avatar. The service, launched in December 2007 by Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the largest wireless provider in the country, is built with NMS Communications’ advanced Video SMS solution.

And now, the second-largest mobile operator in the Philippines, Glob Telecom, is offering to its subscribers Mobile TV programming (live and/or made-for-mobile TV) on 3G wireless phones, a service also built on NMS Communications’ technology.

Globe Telecom (News - Alert) subscribers can now use their 3G capable phones to make a video call to a dial-in number and initiate their mobile TV activities. Subscribers have six channels to choose from where they can watch live feeds of CNN, three local broadcast television channels, sporting events as well as made-for-mobile looped videos of news, cartoons and entertainment content.

Deployed at Globe Telecom through a local NMS systems integration partner, the 3G Mobile TV solution doesn’t need any kind of software download and can be used in almost any 3G phone without configuration. This allows service providers such as Globe Telecom to exploit the latest mobile multimedia technology.

“Mobile phones have transcended simple two-way conversation,” said Jamie Warter (News - Alert), Vice President of Marketing, NMS Communications. “Mobile TV, whether broadcast or video on demand, is primed to deliver more revenue and happier customers. Globe Telecom is one of the pioneers fueling worldwide momentum.”

In case you’re thinking that NMS Communications’ advanced Mobile TV services technology is somehow tied to the Philippines, think again. Many service providers around the world, including RTL Group (News - Alert), Europe’s largest TV and radio broadcaster, and CSL, Hong Kong’s leading mobile operator, are using NMS technology to satisfy growing customer demand for the mobile multimedia experience, and thereby grow revenues, attract new customers and increase existing customer loyalty.
