UC Berkeley Extension to Educate Software Developers on Embedded Linux

For software programmers and developers, the job market can bring promise if they look for opportunities in the smaller consumer equipment sector.

According to the Embedded Linux Consortium (ELC), cell phone and PDA manufacturers are in need of programmers who are trained in embedded Linux to refine the product's software code.

Dr. Kevin Dankwardt, chair of the Education Committee of the Embedded Linux Consortium and a contributing editor to LinuxDevices.com, says that major communications companies are increasingly seeking people with embedded software skills to join their team.

"Companies such as Qualcomm (News - Alert), IBM, HP, Nokia, Brocade Communications, and others are looking for Linux developers who can work with embedded systems," explained Dr. Dankwardt.

"Linux has become the market leader in embedded operating systems for feature-rich devices--everything from cell phones, personal digital assistants, medical devices and industrial automation solutions," he added.

Offering online courses, distance learning programs, online university courses, continuing education online, and online certificate programs, UC Berkeley Extension will be providing four embedded Linux courses. Held at the Redwood City campus, the classes will begin January 26th and will be taught by Dr. Dankwardt.

"These are short, intensive courses designed to provide software developers with very efficient, accelerated learning," said Jim Connor, UC Extension program director.

"The courses are very hands-on with a wealth of practical exercises providing a rapid ramp-up with embedded Linuxm," explained Connor.

UC Berkeley Extension is providing a suite of Linux courses designed to quickly give UNIX and desktop Linux programmers the skills they need to enter into the embedded market, according to Connor.

Running January 26th – 30th, the courses offered include Linux Application Program Design and Development, and Linux Device Driver Issues Design and Development. UC Berkeley Extension is also offering a two-day course in Real-time Linux Design Development and Measurement that be begin January 31, and Embedded Linux Design and Development February 2-4. All of the classes will take place at Extension's Redwood City Campus.

UC Berkeley Extension was founded in 1891 and is the continuing education branch of the University of California Berkeley. Extension currently offers 1,500 courses each year, including online courses, along with more than 30 certificate and professional programs.
